At a ceremony on 6 September, the FDNY added the names of 43 members who died from illnesses related to rescue efforts at the World Trade Center to the World Trade Center Memorial Wall. New York Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh announced on 23 September that two more members of the department had died of cancer and lung disease, bringing to 343 the number of people who had died from 9/11-related illnesses.

Kavanagh also emphasised that this number is equal to the number of firefighters who died on the day of the attack.
