Death toll rises to 36 in wildfires in Hawaii
Forest fires in the US state of Hawaii caused the death of 6 people. Fuelled by the effect of strong winds, the flames spread rapidly, completely destroying hundreds of homes and businesses in the city of Lahaina.

The forest fires that occurred yesterday on Hawaii's Maui Island caused 6 people to die and hundreds of houses and workplaces to be completely burned, moving quickly towards residential areas with the effect of strong winds. Authorities stated that the flames progressed very quickly and some people jumped into the sea to protect themselves from the fire. US coast guard officials announced that 14 people who jumped into the ocean around the Lahaina pier were rescued.

The local authorities of Hawaii's Maui Island, where forest fires are effective, said in a statement on their official website, "While firefighting efforts continue, it has been determined that a total of 36 people have lost their lives today due to the active Lahaina fire."

The Hawaiian Governor's Office warned the public that the fires were under control, but the air quality had dropped considerably due to smoke and ash. US President Joe Biden announced that he had instructed all federal rescue teams on the islands to assist. Hawaiian-born former President Barack Obama shared a donation address for those affected by the fires, saying, "It's hard to see some of the images coming from Hawaii, a very special place for many of us."
