The US has not yet made any requests for negotiations with Iran, and Iran has not received any such request, said Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, Trend reports.
Speaking to reporters after today's Cabinet meeting in Tehran, Araghchi explained that, at present, the ball is still in the air when it comes to any possible discussions between the two countries.
He believes that the atmosphere in Iran is still thick with skepticism, shaped by previous instances where deals were struck only for the other side to back out.
"Certainly, actionable measures are essential to tackle this skepticism," he added.
The Minister further noted that Iran is waiting for the US to announce its policies, after which Iran will assess the situation. If the outcome leads to equal discussions, a decision will be made accordingly.
To recall, on January 16, 2016, the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) came into force between Iran and the P5+1 group (US, Russia, China, the UK, France, and Germany) regarding Iran’s nuclear program. However, on May 8, 2018, the US withdrew from the JCPOA between Iran and the 5+1 group (Russia, China, the UK, France, the US, and Germany) and imposed new sanctions on Iran starting from November 2018.
By the end of 2020, the Iranian parliament decided to pursue a strategic plan in the nuclear sector to counter the sanctions, leading to a suspension of additional steps and the Additional Protocol as per the nuclear agreement.
Consequently, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) faced a reduction in monitoring capabilities by 20–30 percent.
